The New York picture

Agritourism includes on-farm recreation, hospitality, and entertainment. Think farm tours, hayrides, tastings, farm stays, festivals, and other experiences that help guests spend time with agriculture.

How farms participate

Visitor experiences often sit beside direct sales.

Of the farms counted in the special New York analysis, 619 reported agritourism without direct sales and 328 reported both agritourism and direct sales. The categories are distinct, so together they match the 947 farms publicly reported as receiving agritourism income.

Among the farms reporting agritourism only, 43.3% were under 50 acres. Among farms reporting both agritourism and direct sales, 39.9% were under 50 acres.

Methodology and sources

How to read these figures

The USDA Census asks farms to report the gross dollars received before taxes and expenses for agritourism and recreational services. This means the income figures are not profit estimates, and they should not be used to predict what an individual farm will earn.

The Census of Agriculture is conducted every five years. This page uses the 2022 Census, currently the latest complete nationwide Census. We will review it when new public data becomes available, while keeping these individual statistic links stable for readers who cite them.
